Roadshow - Ngee Ann Poly

200 students and teachers alike shifted impatiently in their seats as they waited with breathless anticipation for the commencement of the BIG event on Saturday February 9. It was none other than the first-ever School Outreach Seminar proudly presented by Ngee Ann Polytechnic (School of Business & Accountancy) and the Touch Community Services, in a collaborative effort to promote internet safety awareness and action. This notion was perfectly encapsulated in the slogan of the day: "Be Surf Smart & Web Wise -- Resisting Online Seduction & Crime".

Targeted at groups of people who are most susceptible to the lures of the internet, for instance the upper secondary and ITE students particularly computer/IT clubs members, the entire session was conducted amidst an atmosphere of fun and entertainment. The CRuSH (Cyberspace Risks & where U Seek Help) team led by Jiow Hee Jhee as well as the SBP (Singapore Broadway Playhouse) started the ball rolling by performing a most entertaining and interactive road-show that introduced 7 internet safety tips to the audience.

How was it so? Well, many a times during the skit the SBP performers would snap out of character and actually pose some mind-stimulating questions to the audience, much to their delight. This high level of engagement carried on even after the road-show when the following speakers, Ms Cheryl Sim and Mr Steven Lim, took centre stage.

The former, head of PaGi (Parents Advisory Group for the internet), sorted to reinforce the 7 internet safety tips mentioned earlier. She accomplished this in a most subtle but effective manner through injecting some anecdotes and her personal insights on the internet.

On the other hand, Mr Lim, a lecturer in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, lent a whole new perspective on internet safety altogether by focusing on a growing but often over-looked area of concern - cybercrime in Singapore. In his presentation "Hackers, Crackers & Whackers", he highlighted several real cases of cybercrime committed by young local offenders involving hacking and password stealing. He stressed continually the harsh judicial attitudes taken towards such offenders under the Computer Misuse Act, sending across a clear message that it was no joking matter. Mr Lim summed up his presentation with a short quiz underlining the essentials and prizes to be given out.

The entire seminar ended promptly after two hours with a final round of questions and answers. As the audience strolled out of the lecture hall after collecting their free Virgin-sponsored bottle drinks, many wore pensive faces, but more importantly, the look of enlightenment that the session had shed on them.
