Introduction to Service-Learning

Service is a habit, and like most habits, it is most effectively developed at an early age. Service is also a way that young people can contribute to their community while at the same time receiving something in return.

S-L differs from volunteerism/community service in that learning is intentional, and not accidental. In S-L projects, participants also engage in structured reflection of their service experiences and apply their learning in real-life activities.

It combines service objectives with learning objectives with the intent that the activity changes both the recipient and the provider of the service. This is accomplished by combining service tasks with structured opportunities that link the task to self-reflection, self-discovery, and the acquisition and comprehension of values, skills, and knowledge content.

Some also describe Service-learning as a form of experiential education where learning occurs through a cycle of action and reflection as students work with others through a process of applying what they are learning to community problems and, at the same time, reflecting upon their experience as they seek to achieve real objectives for the community and deeper understanding and skills for themselves.

With the above introduction, nothing beats experiencing S-L yourself! Hence TCS presents to you several opportunities via the CRuSH programmes whereby you can embark on the S-L journey.
