What do you like about CRuSH?
I like the 24/7 system, where I can actually talk to the youths at anytime
of the day, and anywhere, because it’s a forum. We can reach out
anytime, and whenever they need help, they don’t have to wait till
day time to talk to us, they can talk to us at night also.
How
do you think you have benefited from CRuSH?
Besides the CIP hours, I’ve learnt how to speak their lingo. Right
now I’m 21 (years old) and there is a generation difference between
teenagers and young adults, so right now I have to go down to their age
group and speak to them which was quite challenging initially because
I had no idea who 5566 was, but I gradually learnt how to interact with
them.
One
thing you have learnt from this experience?
By knowing how to help and interact with them. Now I know how to help
them, but only through interaction do I know what their needs are, the
problems that they are facing, so I know how to reach out to them also,
and they teach me how to reach out to them also. Not only do they learn
from my experiences, but I’m also learning from their experiences.

What do you like about CRuSH?
The first time I heard about it, I thought it was a new concept, a refreshing
concept. I’ve never heard of community service hours being done
on a forum. This was what first attracted me. Then, when I went into it,
and did it, I think the kids are more open and relaxed over the forum,
than in real life. That’s why I like it.
How
do you think you have benefited from CRuSH?
I think the CIP hours is not the real benefit. The real benefit is that
you actually become a mentor. When you’re put in the shoes of a
mentor, you tend to think more about what you’re going to say, about
your actions, before you want to tell it to the kids, because you don’t
want to tell the kids the wrong thing you see.
One
thing you have learnt from this experience?
You learn from teaching, you learn when you mentor and teach. You learn
how to communicate with kids younger than you, so I can use this on my
little nephew and niece.

E-mentor #3 (An undergraduate) Lim Seng Huat, SMU
What do you like about CRuSH?
It helps me know what teenagers today are thinking about, and brings back
memories of how I was like before. All these different perspectives on
different aspects of life, help me open up my world too, and I was really
glad to be of help to some of these secondary school students.
Would
you recommend e-mentoring to others?
I would definitely recommend this to my friends because most of us chat
on-line anyway. So going onto the forum and posting messages, we are all
quite used to it anyway. (Volunteering as an e-mentor) something is something
new, so can try out.

How do feel about the programme so far?
I think it’s very interesting, I like the interaction with the students,
especially when you post, and they respond to your perspectives, when
they bounce off their own perspectives. And when you see their awareness
that you have brought about, it is very encouraging. And when you get
the chance to impart your own perspectives into the situation, when you
see them respond “oh yah, I didn’t see it that way”,
it’s really satisfying.
Would
you recommend e-mentoring to others?
Definitely. Especially those who are already online anyway.

What do you find rewarding about e-mentoring?
You get a personal relationship with the young people, and can help nurture
their young minds.

How do feel about the programme so far?
I think it’s very good, actually, fantastic. You get to see other
e-mentors, their perspectives, and you get to interact with the students.
By interacting with them (the students), you get to know what’s
their views and that’s how you learn as well, you may even become
a better parent in future because you understand how the kids are doing.
I think the best part was I learnt a lot from other e-mentors because
some of them are very profound in their thinking and it makes me think
better.
