| Bridging Generations Through the Internet @ SAFRA Game Haven
On 20th February 2010, 8 parents took a glimpse of the virtual world and experienced
virtual gaming at our workshop, "Bridging Generation Through the Internet".
The workshop was conducted in a LAN gaming center, at SAFRA Game Haven. The workshop not only
gave parents and adults an understanding of what cyber-gaming is all about, it also showed
them what a LAN gaming center is and what kind of games youths play in a typical LAN center.
Aimed at providing a practical hands-on experience in cyber-gaming, the participants
were given a step-by-step introduction to Counter-Strike, a popular "First-Person Shooter"
or FPS game. Many found it difficult to play the game in the beginning, but with help and
facilitation from our youth volunteers, the participants began to understand and got a hang
of the game-play.
During the break, the participants had the opportunity to tour SAFRA Game Haven. They saw
some youths gaming at the centre and were introduced to some of popular games that are being
played in LAN centers.
Through this workshop, the participants experienced the thrill of challenging one
another in the virtual world. They also gained a better understanding of the games
youth play and the motivations behind their gaming habits.
Here are some feedbacks from a few parents:
"Playing the Counter-Strike game was the best thing I learnt today." - Mr Lam
Weng Kwong, father of two children.
"This workshop is very useful to parents with kids in primary and secondary
school." - Ms Ko
"I learnt about the different motivations for gaming at the workshop." - Ms
Wong Seok Hong
If you had missed this, the next workshop will be held on 27 March 2010, where parents
will discover the wonders of using social networking sites like FaceBook to connect with
their child. See you there!
