From Client to Mentor

Where I was before…

Like many youths his age, Wayne enjoyed computer gaming, watching anime, soccer and hanging out with friends. He played computer games like DOTA (Defence of the Ancients), CounterStrike and Maple Story. He used to frequent LAN shops with friends to play DOTA and had a Level 124 MapleStory character.

He used to spend more than 8 hours a day playing his computer games and sometimes he played overnight during school holidays. The games give him a sense of achievement and acceptance which was lacking at home.

As he was overly engrossed in gaming and lacked self discipline and control over his gaming habits, he failed two modules in first year of polytechnic studies.

Turning point…
At TOUCH Cyber Wellness, he was introduced to our mentors and a new circle of friends in a healthy gaming environment. With positive mentoring methods and deliberate affirmation for improvement in his studies and improved self discipline over gaming, he gradually gained control over his gaming habits.

Where I am today…

Now, he plays computer games only for leisure and with the right focus and priorities on studies and family. He also volunteers as a youth mentor for TOUCH Cyber Wellness; Cyber Wellness Enrichment Programme.

What he said of his volunteering experience...

After Kayaking:
“…the way you face the current (when kayaking), is up to you. You can either go against it in order to reach your destination, or move along with the current and swayed way from your target. Therefore, I encourage all of us to face our problems, and not try to run away…”

After the Fishing Trip:
“I learnt to be focused and have patience. Why focus? ...Because Anthony (CWEP Staff Mentor) stayed in one spot and he caught 2 fishes! Whereas the rest of us were moving about impatiently and we didn’t catch any.”
“…we got to do it with our full focus and patiently wait for the right time…”
